Councilmember LaShay D. Harris Invites South
District to Community Dialogue
On May 17, 2020, there was a memorial event that took place
in the South District near Chili Avenue and Thurston Road, where there was a
gathering of more than 100 people. This resulted in the arrests of three (3)
individuals for disorderly conduct and numerous nuisance complaints from
residents in the area.
Councilmember LaShay D. Harris (South District) will be joined by Vice
President Willie J. Lightfoot and other City officials this Thursday, May 21,
2020 at 1:00 p.m., as she hosts a community discussion about the recent
incident and discusses a plan for nuisance activity in the area.
The meeting will take place using videoconferencing; the link for individuals

“I want to remind our citizens that we should still be
engaging in physical distancing; the Governor’s Executive Order and guidance
from the health department prohibit large crowds from gathering. I understand
that this is difficult, we are all making sacrifices for the health and safety
of our community, but we must continue to distance. I also want to commend our
officers for their efforts to disperse the crowd and keep our streets safe. I
am appalled by the actions of some in the crowd who threw bottles and attacked
our officers – we cannot tolerate this type of behavior,” said South District
Councilmember LaShay D. Harris, “I know that our residents are anxious to get
back to normal life and I share that desire. However, the City of
Rochester should and will follow the approach of opening in phases. The
crisis is not over just because we started Phase 1 of reopening on May 15th.
In order to maintain our safety, I urge Rochesterians to continue to practice
physical distancing and wearing masks when in public to prevent the spread of
COVID-19.”
