Description:

Thrash (1893-1965) was born in Griffin Georgia. He left home at 15 to study art at the one place he knew African American students were accepted, the Art Institute of Chicago. This presentation is about a prolific artist whose art practice focused on African American life, the first African American hired by the WPA’s Federal Art Project in Philadelphia, and a member of that city’s historic Pyramid Club.

This lecture will be given Cynthia Hawkins, Ph.D. She is the Gallery Director and Curator at SUNY Geneseo’s Bertha V.B. Lederer Gallery; her research interests are 19th African American History and Art History, culture, museums, and theory.

This lecture will be through Zoom and requires registration.
