City of Rochester and RTS News Release

(Thursday, July 22, 2021) – Rochester, NY: Rochester Mayor Lovely A. Warren and RTS CEO Bill Carpenter formally welcomed HOPR shared mobility system to the Rochester region today.

“A growing number of people in our region want more mobility solutions to choose from to reach the important destinations in their lives,” said RTS CEO Bill Carpenter. “It is why we reimagined the public transit system to make it more frequent, reliable, and connected. It is why we established this shared mobility system in the City of Rochester. And it is why we are still working to expand that system into the suburban areas of our community. RTS is happy to work with HOPR and the City of Rochester to make this micro-mobility program successful and I thank them for their partnership.”

“I am proud to partner with RTS and HOPR on this exciting expansion of Rochester’s bike- and scooter- share network,” said Mayor Warren. “This addition to our transportation system improves access to employment centers in and beyond the city and helps our merchants attract new customers. This project supports the goals of our Equity and Recovery Agenda and is an important part of our larger efforts to create more jobs, safer and more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities.”

In June, HOPR began to deploy a fleet of 500 shared vehicles including pedal bikes, electric assist bikes and electric scooters throughout the city and surrounding towns to establish a shared mobility system that is integrated with public transit, convenient, affordable and safe. So far, HOPR has 35 active stations in place throughout the City, as well as Brockport, Fairport, and the University of Rochester, with 150 pedal bikes and 220 electric scooters available. Electric assist bikes will be available once the physical racks are installed. The goal is to connect the last mile between a destination and public transportation while encouraging the use of non-polluting vehicles in a healthy, active lifestyles. Bikes and scooters have been placed at transit hubs, parks, commercial centers, campuses and other places that serve as key destinations.

Following a public bidding process, RTS contracted HOPR to deploy and operate the system and the City awarded HOPR exclusive access to city right of way for shared-mobility stations. The City also contributed a share of its funding from the U.S. Congestion Mitigation Air Quality program. HOPR is a Florida-based company that has provided shared-mobility service since 2011.

To access the system, users can download the HOPR Transit app from iOS and Android. To keep streets and sidewalks safe for all, riders are encouraged to park at the designated parking areas. A complete map of locations is available on the HOPR Transit app. To learn how to ride safely visit https://gohopr.com/ride/.

Rental prices start at $1 to unlock and $0.15 per minute for pedal bikes and $0.27 per minute for electric bikes and scooters. Monthly memberships start at $10 per month. The program operates in the spring, summer, fall and closes down for the winter season.
