News Release - International Plaza Closed for Labor Day Weekend; September Events Announced

(Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021)—The International Plaza, 828 N. Clinton Ave., will be closed tonight and Sunday in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Market days will resume Thursday, September 9 featuring free, live music by Nueva Secuencia from 5–8 p.m. and continue on Sunday, September 12 from 1–5 p.m. with performances by Push Physical Theater.

“Fiesta en la Plaza! Where the heartbeats of our community meet!” is the theme for the 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at The International Plaza, as the site will host three events as part of the Key Bank Rochester’s Fringe Festival during Market Days in September.

A special Hispanic Heritage Month opening event featuring performances by Latin Jazz quintet Mambo Kings, Grupo Cultural Latinos en Rochester, a presentation on the history of the Rochester’s Latino community by Julio Saenz as well as refreshments will take place on Thursday, September 16 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Fiesta en la Plaza celebrates “Flairs from Brazil,” another Fringe Festival Event with live music by Rosa Boemia, Forró Estrelas Do Norte and the Brazilian Drumming Ensemble and a commemorative brick unveiling ceremony will take place 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, September 19

The final Fringe event at this venue will take place 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, September 23 as the heartbeats of the community gather for an interactive drumming experience, performances by Borinquen Dance Academy and Womba Africa Drumming and Dance.

On Sunday, September 26, the Puerto Rican Festival joins the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration with live entertainment soon to be announced.

Market Days at the International Plaza are open 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays until September 23, and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays through October 17. Entertainment programming is scheduled in partnership with Ibero American Development Corporation. Sponsorship for the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration is provided by the City of Rochester’s Heritage Committee, Wegmans, The Puerto Rican festival, GCLR, Alma de Mexico, Poder 97.1.
