News Release - Reparations and Universal Basic Income Committee to Host Community Forum on Homeownership

City of Rochester

News Release

(Monday, Oct. 4, 2021) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren’s Reparations and Universal Basic Income (UBI) Committee will host a virtual community engagement conference on boosting homeownership for Rochester families at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7.

“We are intentional about putting Rochester families on a path to building generational wealth through homeownership,” said Mayor Warren. “We must undo the historical wrongs of redlining that led to concentrations of poverty and crime by providing residents with opportunities to own a home that they can be proud of, in a neighborhood they can invest in and have an asset they can pass down for generations to come. I encourage the community’s participation in this community conversation on housing and homeownership.”

The RUBI subcommittee on homeownership will share its recommendations to encourage homeownership among Black and Brown residents and is seeking the community’s input.

Interested residents can participate by visiting www.rocrubi.com. The event will also be live streamed on the ROC RUBI Facebook page (www.facebook.com/RocRUBI) for those who simply wish to watch.

The RUBI exploratory committee is charged with reviewing existing Universal Basic Income and reparations pilots in other communities to understand what life-changing programs can be developed in Rochester. The initiative seeks to use potential marijuana tax revenue to close the wealth gap to achieve equity and home ownership.
