News Release -- Statement from Mayor Malik D. Evans on the Passing of LGBTQ+ Pioneer, Historian Evelyn Bailey

City of Rochester

News Release

(Wednesday, July 13, 2022) – Today, I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Evelyn Bailey and thankful for her life and its powerful impact on Rochester and its LGBTQ+ Community.

By chronicling the history of Rochester’s LGBTQ+ Community with diligence and insight, coupled with her lifelong commitment to human rights for all people, Evelyn Bailey gave the LGBTQ+ people of Rochester a durable foundation on which to build and fortify their community while advancing the causes of equity and justice within our city and beyond.

I am also struck by the poetic timing of Evelyn’s passing, which comes during Rochester’s Pride Month and just days before our city is set to hold its annual Pride Parade and Pride Festival in the 50th anniversary year of Rochester’s first Gay Community Picnic. These joyous and fully public celebrations of LGBTQ+ Pride in Rochester bring the story of her life on earth to an uplifting close, while providing an enduring and fitting monument to the legacy of Evelyn Bailey.
