News Release Mayor Warren Expands Mixed Recycling Citywide

City of Rochester

News Release

(Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016) – Mayor Lovely Warren announced today that the Mixed Recycling program is being expanded to the entire city following completion of a successful pilot program.

“In these times of climate change, it is more important than ever to protect our environment,” said Mayor Warren. “We’ve made it easier for residents to do their part by expanding our Mixed Recycling Program. The hope is that this improved convenience will yield an increase in participation – keeping recyclable material out of the refuse stream and bolstering our efforts to create safer more vibrant neighborhoods, more jobs and better educational opportunities for our children.”

Mixed Recycling means paper can be mixed with metal, glass and plastic--and that all recyclable materials may conveniently be placed together in one large container. Starting Nov. 7, 2016 through spring 2017, 96-gallon blue recycling containers will be delivered to residents in phases. The new container holds eight times the volume of the old 12-gallon boxes and has a weather-proof lid that will keep recyclables clean and dry and reduce litter. The new blue container will be serviced by an automated truck that compacts the load for more efficient service.

Once residents receive their new blue container, they will be converted to an every-other-week recycling collection schedule, taking the blue container to the curb only every-other-week on their regular refuse collection days. Calendars highlighting collection weeks will be mailed to residents and door hangers will be distributed to households as a reminder when every other week recycling collection begins for that neighborhood.

Full results of the Mixed Recycling Pilot program are also posted on the webpage. Residents can call 311 (428-5990 if calling from outside of city limits) with questions or to request information.
