News Release - Statement from Mayor Lovely A. Warren Urging Amazon to Reconsider Rochester Region for HQ2

City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019) – Today I am calling on Amazon’s leaders to strongly reconsider the Rochester Metro Corridor for the company’s eastern headquarters, also known as Amazon HQ2. Once, the I-35 corridor between San Antonio and Austin was empty. It was 80 miles of freeway with little to nothing in-between. Today, it is becoming a single metropolitan high-tech mecca. Amazon’s HQ2 could transform I-90 into an innovation corridor delivering jobs and opportunity to all of our residents and businesses.

The offer our region submitted during the initial search process still stands and I know Gov. Cuomo would be a willing partner to keep this development in New York State. The fact that Amazon has already opted to open a new distribution center in our community as the result of information garnered from the initial submission provides further evidence that our region is an ideal location for HQ2.

I have no doubt the city of Rochester would be an excellent home for Amazon and its employees. Our city has been home to some of the most innovative companies in the world and I believe Amazon should look again at all we have to offer. Rochester’s offerings include a geographic position central to many of North America’s largest cities and population centers; a brilliant workforce powered by 19 colleges and universities; a growing Downtown Innovation Zone; and an excellent quality of life boosted by a low cost of living, short commute times, a thriving arts and entertainment scene and beautiful natural resources that are the envy of other cities.

Rochester has an incredible history of tenacity, resilience and innovation – characteristics we share with Amazon. For these reasons and more, I hope Amazon will take another close look at our region.
