(Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2020) —
Mayor Lovely A. Warren is calling eighth grade city students to become “Mayor for a Day,” by participating in the inaugural “If I Were Mayor” essay contest. Students are asked to write an essay that describes how they would accomplish Mayor Warren’s mission of creating more jobs, safer more vibrant neighborhoods and better educational opportunities. The winning essayist will become honorary Mayor for a day.

“I believe in the youth of our city, and I am counting on them to continue to work hard and take advantage of the many opportunities available to them, because they are the future of our city,” said Mayor Warren. “That’s why the ‘If I Were Mayor Contest’ is a great opportunity for city eighth graders.

All entries to Mayor Warren’s local contest will be forwarded to the New York State Conference of Mayors "If I Were Mayor" competition—a competition for eighth graders in the entire State of New York. Visit www.nycom.org for more information on prizes and judging at the state level.

Essays must begin with: “If I were Mayor, I would…” and will be evaluated on idea content as well as creativity, clarity and thoughtfulness, along with proper use of grammar. Students are encouraged to research the Mayor’s role in city government in order to create an insightful and credible essay.

The top three essayists will win lunch with Mayor Warren, as well as have their pictures and winning essays published on the City’s social media pages, website and in the Mayor’s quarterly newsletter.

One essay per student must be submitted as a Word document attachment and emailed to: essaycontest@cityofrochester.gov no later than March 2, 2020 and should not exceed the maximum word count of 500 words. Each essay should contain a heading inclusive of the name of the student, name and address of school or homeschool and the teacher’s name. Essays must be double spaced, 12 pt. Times Roman.
