News Release

(Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021) – The City’s Department of Recreation and Human Services (DRHS), in conjunction with its partner agencies at the Greater Rochester Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) and the SUNY Brockport Institute for Poverty Studies and Economic Development will conduct a virtual question and answer session, 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25 to discuss the intersectionality of Rochester’s criminal justice and community healthcare systems with regard to responding to mental health crises.

DRHS Commissioner Daniele Lyman Torres will be joined by City Councilmember Mary Lupien; Shani Wilson, Board Chair, Police Accountability Board; and Sara Taylor, President and CEO, Positive Steps Consulting for a panel discussion about creating comprehensive, community-based responses for victims and families in crisis. Topics to be covered include intersectional approaches to healthcare, innovative solutions to responding mental health crises and new programs to put intersectional approaches into practice. The panel will respond to questions from the public following the discussion.

In October 2020, Mayor Lovely Warren launched the Crisis Intervention Services Office to establish a non-law enforcement, comprehensive community response to homicides, as well as calls involving mental health, domestic violence and other related crises.
