City of Rochester

News Release

(Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011) — City Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner R. Carlos Carballada, City Councilmember Carla Palumbo, County Executive Maggie Brooks, New York State Sen. Joseph E. Robach, Kevin Hurley, Economic Development Program Administrator at Empire State Development, and Mark S. Lynch, President of New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E), joined Robert G. Gross, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Monro Services Corp., today to celebrate the official ground breaking for Monro Services Corp.’s expansion at 200 Holleder Parkway.

Monro Services Corporation, the parent company of Monro Muffler and Brake, is a leading provider of automotive undercar repair and tire services. The company will retain and expand its centralized corporate offices, warehouse and distribution operations at the site. The $4 million investment helps retain 190 employees and create at least 20 new jobs.

"We have a great affinity for Rochester, which has served as our home for more than 50 years, and are very proud to invest in our future in this great city, said Robert Gross. “This expansion will help to ensure that our operations in Rochester can sufficiently support our store base, allowing us to continue providing trusted service to our loyal customers.”

“Monro has been an important business in Western New York for over 50 years and the City is happy to support Monro’s expansion in Rochester,” said Mayor Thomas S. Richards. “Despite a challenging economic environment across the country, Monro has continued to be a regional leader and is growing into a strong national company, reinforcing Rochester’s reputation as a great place to do business.”

"By maintaining and expanding its operations in Rochester, Monro Muffler will continue to be a vital source of employment and economic opportunity for the local community, said Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Kenneth Adams. “Working with our local partners and Monro, we put together a strong incentive package that will allow Monro to expand its headquarters and warehouse so it can continue to meet its customer needs in an efficient and cost-saving manner. We thank our partners for coming to the table to secure nearly 200 jobs and the company's presence in New York."

"With locations across the United States, Monro Muffler understands that companies have a choice in today's global economy,” said Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. “We are thrilled that they have chosen to expand their operations in Monroe County and are a proud partner in this job creation and retention effort."

"RG&E is pleased to offer assistance to help the expansion plans of Monro Muffler and not only keep, but grow jobs in Rochester,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “From September 2010 through December 2013, NYSEG and RG&E plan to invest nearly $40 million in economic development grants and rate incentives to businesses that want to expand in, or relocate to, upstate New York."

Monro Muffler, founded in Rochester in 1957, has more than 800 locations in 19 states and employs more than 5000 people. When the company outgrew its current headquarters and distribution facilities they explored options for additional space. Monro decided an expansion of the current Rochester facilities was the best option.

The project was a collaborative effort between the City of Rochester, Empire State Development (ESD), Monroe County and RG&E. ESD is providing a $400,000 capital grant. RG&E economic development programs are providing up to $370,000. Monro is receiving property tax abatement and low cost financing from Monroe County and the City of Rochester.
