News Release - City, Partners Seek Applicants for Summer Youth Employment Programs

City of Rochester

News Release

(Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023) – The City of Rochester, Monroe County, and RochesterWorks invite youth ages 14 through 20 to apply for the City’s Summer of Opportunity Program (SOOP) and RochesterWorks Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) by March 31.

“Rochester’s youth employment programs provide meaningful opportunities to nurture personal growth and foster career development skills,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “By teaching responsibility, independence, and a strong work ethic we can develop Rochester’s youth into a motivated generation of community leaders and businesspeople. I want to thank Monroe County and RochesterWorks for partnering with us on this important youth development initiative to help us create a safe, equitable and prosperous Rochester.”

“The Summer of Opportunity Program provides local youth with the valuable opportunity to gain experience and insight into potential long-term career pathways—along with the chance to make meaningful connections and income over the summer months,” said RochesterWorks Executive Director Dave Seeley. “RochesterWorks is excited to continue our long-standing partnership with the City of Rochester on this program and to see how this year’s program enriches the lives of our program participants and the community at-large.”

These programs offer 6 to 8 weeks of paid employment opportunities for youth who are currently enrolled in middle school, high school, or actively pursuing their high school equivalency diploma. Program participants will learn skills that prepare them for the workforce and academic success.

Upon completion of the application, participants will have the opportunity to interview for paid summer jobs and/or internships. Past participating employers have included the City of Rochester, community organizations, colleges, and local businesses.

The application process requires youth to submit the following documents prior to the deadline: A work permit; social security card; a school report card; and official ID, such as a school ID, driver’s license; non-driver ID, or a Safe Child ID. Once the application is submitted, the applicant will receive an Applications Signature Report by email to complete and submit.

Selection for this program is competitive and jobs are not guaranteed. To apply or learn more, visit CityofRochester.Gov/SOOP or call the Summer Youth Hotline at (585) 428-6366.
