The written examination is the first step in becoming a Rochester Police Officer, and your success on the examination is critical to continuing the process.
The department provides free written workshops for the written examination which gives applicants an inside view of frequently asked questions, tips on preparation, tips on improving test taking skills, and strategies for success. These workshops are held in the month prior to the exam. The dates of the workshops will be announced here when they are known. Applicants are only allowed to attend one workshop (all workshops provide the same information).
We encourage ALL applicants to attend the written workshops, but understand that work schedules and distance from Rochester can sometimes make it difficult. For those applicants that cannot attend the written workshops, please click here to refer to the New York State Department of Civil Service website for test guides and resource booklets. This should provide an insight to the type of questions commonly found on the police officer examination. These questions will be similar to those encountered on the written examination for Police Officer.
