The Youth Training Academy (YTA) program is a component of the Summer of Opportunity Program that is designed to teach core clerical and customer service skills to high school students ages 16 and over. The goal of the program is to provide training to high school students who have expressed an interest in working those settings, and also offer an opportunity to enhance their training with targeted, paid internships to gain practical experience.

Summary of Activities:
Youth receive 20 hours of training from consultants in the following core skills areas
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Written and verbal skills.
Writing: Letters, reports, memos, email and telephone messages.
Verbal: Telephone skills; taking messages; verbally communicating with peers, supervisors and the public.
INTERPERSONAL/SOCIAL SKILLS: Workplace behavior skills, such as teamwork and conflict resolution skills.
BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY SKILLS: Computers and PDA’s, Printers, scanners and copiers. Fax machines, typewriters and business calculators.
FINAL REVIEW & INTERVIEWS: Each student who completes the training will receive a final review and evaluation, to determine if they are ready to move into a paid internship in an office. The internship will be based on:
A. Assessment - How well the student performed in the training
B. Student Availability –Must be available to work hours as required at the work site
C. If a work site is available
INTERNSHIPS:
Students will receive hands on training, work experience and job shadowing in a business office, applying skills they have learned.
- Stipends will be paid by the Bureau of Youth Services
- No paperwork is involved for the internship site supervisor
- Internships total 30 hours over a six week period
- Dress code for interns
