News Release - Police Add New K-9s

(June 21, 2011) --The Rochester Police Department graduated the two newest members of the department: K-9 “Sully” and K-9 “Rocky” on June 10. Both dogs are 19-month-old German Shepherds.

Each completed a 14-week basic K-9 school in which they were taught obedience, protection work, building searches, agility and tracking. Upon completion of the school, each team had to pass a rigorous certification process administered by NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Officer Dan Nowack, a 25 year veteran and lead instructor for the class, is partnered with K-9 Sully, and Officer Pat Carney, a 24 year veteran, is partnered with K-9 Rocky. Both officers are experienced K-9 handlers and have trained K-9s in the past.

Each team will working out of the RPD’s Special Operations Division/K-9 Unit where they and other members of the K-9 Unit will support the Patrol Division with their unique capabilities.
