News Release

(Friday, Aug. 26, 2011) — Deputy Mayor Leonard E. Redon, City Council President Lovely A. Warren and Neighborhood and Business Development Commissioner R. Carlos Carballada joined President Josh Mack today to celebrate the expansion of Excel Educational Services, LLC at 1370 Hudson Ave. in the city’s Northeast Quadrant.

The Excel Educational Services Learning Center provides tutoring, test preparation, education and training services ranging from K-12 math, English language arts and reading to SAT/GED preparation, Accuplacer, ACT, COMPASS, Holistic Early Learning Program (H.E.L.P.), advanced mathematics, life and financial skills and job preparedness. The center has been in operation for five years.

“Our youth are the future of this community, so it is important that we give them the tools they need to succeed,” said Deputy Mayor Leonard E. Redon. “Supplemental academic support programs help schools and parents to properly prepare the next generation of citizens. We are fortunate to have Excel Educational Services in this neighborhood, and the expansion is a welcome sign that they’re here to stay.”

The expansion project involved a full building renovation. It also included upgrades to the computer lab to provide a more conducive and functional instructional environment, partitions in the study/work areas to provide privacy and versatility and parking lot improvements. The work allowed for the retention of two full-time and six part-time positions. The company expects to create an additional two full-time positions to help with the school-aged youth program.

Excel Educational Services is an approved Supplemental Educational Services provider under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The SES provision of NCLB enables low-income families to seek free tutoring services that expand the options for children who are struggling in school. Students can receive extra help in academic subjects such as reading, language arts, and mathematics. Generally, these services are delivered outside the school day – before or after school, on weekends or during the summer months. Access is provided free-of-charge to all eligible participants who enroll with Excel.

The City of Rochester has provided $7,500 from the Small Business Matching Grant program. An additional $49,000 in private equity investment was raised for the expansion.
