City of Rochester
News Release
(Wednesday,
Feb. 3, 2021) – Mayor Lovely A. Warren, City Council Vice
President Willie J. Lightfoot and Councilmember Miguel Melendez will be joined
by representatives of the Police Accountability Board and other community
partners who were involved in the creation of the draft response at 7 p.m.,
tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 4, to present Rochester’s draft response to Governor
Andrew Cuomo’s Executive Order 203 and share opportunities for community
feedback. The event will be accessible via Zoom (details below), as well as
streamed on the City’s YouTube channel at https://youtube.com/c/CityofRochesterVideos.
Governor Cuomo signed the Executive Order on
June 12, 2020 in response to growing social unrest that was occurring across
the country at the time. It required all of New York’s local governments to draft
and adopt policing reform plans that seek to build mutual trust and respect
between police and the communities they serve.
“I would like to thank the outstanding
group of representative leaders who have been meeting regularly since October,
working to develop the first draft of Rochester’s plan,” said Mayor Warren. “We
have completed a first draft report that I am proud to present for public
input. Be assured, on the April 1 deadline, Rochester will submit a plan that not
only has been sufficiently vetted by the community, but one that makes
Rochester a safer and more inclusive city.”
Mayor Warren convened a working group
consisting of members of City staff, City Council, the Commission on Racial and
Structural Equity (RASE), the United Christian Leadership Ministry (UCLM) and
the Police Accountability Board (PAB), and others, to work as a team to guide
the preparation of the City’s plan for Executive Order 203. Their meeting
minutes can be found at: www.cityofrochester.gov/executiveorder203.
