Description: | The Rochester Latino community region traces its roots back to pioneers like Puerto Rican Domingo Delgado, a key Eastman Kodak executive of the 1890s. Like many immigrants before them, Latinos arrived in search of the better opportunities Rochester offered and by the 1950s had an established community with churches and businesses. The 1960s and 1970s brought further development of the Latino identity, foreshadowing the growing political and economic power the community wields today. This presentation will cover the people and events that shaped the Latino community and current trends in its booming growth.
Julio Sáenz serves as the Chief Communications Officer and Development Officer for the Ibero-American Action League, headquartered in Rochester, NY. He also serves as the general manager of Poder 97.1, having launched the station in 2015. Julio is also a professor in the School of Communications at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Sáenz has a long career in media and community organizations, having served as the editor and publisher of newspapers in Rochester, Atlanta and Los Angeles. He currently hosts “Be Inspired,” a weekly entrepreneurship program on WROC Channel 8. He holds a B.A. in International Relations and Mass Communications from Florida International University and a Master’s Degree in Marketing from Roberts Wesleyan College. |
