News Release -- Statement by Mayor Malik D. Evans on One-Year Anniversary of Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz Shooting Death

City of Rochester

News Release

(Friday, July 21, 2023) – Today, as we mark the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of Rochester Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz, I ask the people of Rochester to find a moment for silent reflection or words of prayer in memory of his bravery and the pain his family and fellow officers in the Rochester Police Department continue to bear.

Officer Mazurkiewicz is now one of 16 Rochester Police Officers who gave their lives to protect others. These deaths can never be normalized and the names of these officers must never be forgotten. They are poignant reminders that public safety comes at a very steep cost and we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to those who are willing to pay the ultimate price.

I ask also that we remember all of the victims of the senseless violence that continues to plague our city and the loss and suffering their families also continue to bear. Officer Mazurkiewicz sacrificed his own to help bring this violence under control. He sacrificed his own life to protect the lives of others. We cannot let that sacrifice be made in vain.

As Jesus said in the Book of Matthew: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called Children of God.”
