(Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023) – Mayor Malik D. Evans was joined today by state and local leaders to celebrate a ribbon cutting for the Genesee Gateway Park. The park improvements and upgrades to one of the busiest parts of the Genesee Riverway Trail include refurbished railing along the river; park paths, trail, and plaza paving; a unique, custom-designed playground; basketball court; enhanced user amenities such as picnic tables, grills, trash receptacles, seating, bike racks and bike repair stations; and new lighting utilizing the latest and most efficient LED lighting standards. A hand-carried boat launch for canoes and kayaks to access the river will open in the spring.

"We continue to open up recreational and leisure access to one of our most significant natural resources, the Genesee River," said Mayor Malik D. Evans. "ROC the Riverway projects are a physical reflection of our ongoing partnerships with state and local agencies and the engineering and construction fields. None of this would move forward with the momentum it has without the support and leadership of Governor Kathy Hochul, and for that, we are grateful."

The $2.5 million Genesee Gateway Park improvements are part of the New York State support for the city’s $500 million ROC the Riverway Initiative, that is designed to strategically align transformational projects along the Genesee River to better leverage the value of the riverfront throughout the city.

New York Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez said, “Genesee Gateway Park is another transformative step forward in the overall revitalization of Rochester’s burgeoning waterfront. This public park now offers activities for everyone including a boat launch for paddlers, a playground for families, basketball courts and a place for visitors who just want to relax at the water’s edge and enjoy the spectacular view. The Department of State is proud to have contributed Local Waterfront Revitalization Program funding to this remarkable project that will reconnect the people of Rochester to their Genesee Riverfront.”
