News Release - City to Offer Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Training, Certified Lifeguards May Quality for Summer Jobs

(Wednesday, March 6, 2013) – The City’s Department of Recreation and Youth Services is pleased to offer free Red Cross Lifeguard Certification training classes for local youth ages 16 and over, starting next week. Certified lifeguards may qualify for summer lifeguarding jobs with the City’s Department of Recreation.

Interested participants may enroll in one of two separate sections of classes being offered at the Adams Street Community Center, 85 Adams St. on the following dates and times:

March 12 through May 9:
-Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m.
(No sessions will be held on April 2 or April 4, spring break week)

May 13 through May 18:
-Monday through Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.,
-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification training classes are being offered free of charge to all high school students in the Rochester City School District ages 16 through 18 years old. Participants will be required to purchase a pocket mask and accompanying American Red Cross book for $50. Youth ages 16 and 17, living outside of the city, are welcome to participate in the training classes for a registration fee of $75. The classes are also open to anyone age 18 or over, (regardless of residency) however, those individuals will be required to pay a registration fee of $125. Former lifeguards seeking re-certification must attend a series of three classes. The registration fee for this class is $75. Re-certification classes will be held at the Adams Street Community Center, 85 Adams St., from 6 to 9 p.m. on the following dates: Tuesday, May 21, Wednesday, May 22 and Thursday, May 23.
