Also, consider becoming a foster caregiver for our Pet Safety Net Program to temporarily house owned companion animals for people dealing with a variety of crises.

Our Foster Care Program was established to extend the walls of the shelter during periods of high intake and to better serve special needs animals, however it has become the focus for housing the majority of animals in our care. Traditional fosterlings may include a litter of un-weaned kittens who need round-the-clock attention, an adult cat with an upper respiratory infection, a dog with an injury, or an animal that simply does not do well in a shelter environment.  In some cases foster caregivers are necessary because the shelter has run out of available space and we need a foster home to serve as a temporary home until a permanent one can be identified.

Fostering can extend holding periods, increase likelihood of adoption, aid in healing and recovery from injury or illness, reduce shelter crowding, and improve socialization between animals and people.  Additionally, fostering a special needs animal is a wonderfully rewarding way to assist Animal Services with the many challenges the organization faces on a daily basis. We also offer temporary emergency foster care for pets of people experiencing crises. Learn more about our Pet Safety Net program

Animal shelters are inherently scary and stressful environments with restrictive confinement, high volumes of unfamiliar animals, human visitors, sounds, and odors.  In spite of our efforts to provide high-quality care and enrichment, animals exposed to such stress are more susceptible to illness and behavioral deterioration. The reality is that home environments are more preferable and  have become the new norm for how we house homeless and transient pets.
